This e-boiler project is just one of nearly 80 projects outlined in Sappi Europe ’ s decarbonization roadmap
to reduce CO 2 emissions – in line with Scope 1 and 2 – by 14 percent by 2026 and as much as 30 percent by 2030 ,” Ferdinand Koster , Mill Director at Sappi Maastricht Mill , highlights .
A further benefit of the second 20-megawatt e-boiler is that it will further boost the mill ’ s unique ability to switch between natural gas and renewable energy . This is important because renewable energy in the Netherlands largely relies on unpredictable wind and solar . Not only does flexing ensure that the mill maintains power at times of low renewable energy availability , but it also means that , at other times , the mill can contribute to stabilizing the wider electricity grid for other users .
This e-boiler project is just one of nearly 80 projects outlined in Sappi Europe ’ s decarbonization roadmap , a blueprint that will see the company ’ s energy-related sustainability targets through to 2025 . This also closely aligns with Sappi ’ s science-based targets for 2030 .
However , the long-term , global commitment to green processes and products , sustainability and climate protection extend across the entire Sappi Group . As it states on its website : ‘ we are building a more circular economy by making what we should , not just what we can .’ Sappi ’ s admirable philosophy makes it a positive role model for businesses across the world , showcasing the company as a green ambassador and example of what can be achieved with the right approach . ■
