Unlocking tomorrow’ s intelligent supply chain

Data, disruption, and digital transformation- Sarah Underwood reports on a recent MT webinar

In an era defined by global disruptions and relentless technological change, manufacturing supply chains are under more pressure than ever. From pandemics to geopolitical instability, recent events have exposed critical vulnerabilities- shifting the focus from efficiency at all costs to building resilience, agility and data-driven intelligence.

These themes took center stage at a recent webinar hosted by Finelight Media’ s Manufacturing Today and featuring Malgorzata Samuel from BAT, Mahendra Jape from Data Angles, Tim Hermans from STAEDEAN, and Tiffany Brewer from Blue Yonder. The webinar discussion focused on the power of data, AI, and digital transformation in futureproofing manufacturing supply chains.
The rise of AI: Powering the next evolution of supply chains
There was unanimous agreement among the experts: AI will be the biggest disruptor in supply chains over the next three to five years. With applications ranging from predictive analytics to autonomous operations, AI is reshaping how manufacturers respond to change.
AI’ s success hinges on data. Legacy systems such as MRPs, ERPs, and PLMs have historically siloed data across operations. Now, real-time visibility across the entire supply network- from raw materials to delivery- is critical.
The solution? Establishing a centralized data platform or‘ control tower’ powered by ultra low-cost IoT devices and tools such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 to unlock full end-toend visibility and smarter decision-making.
Data must also be accurate, actionable and trusted. Speakers stressed the need for accessible, well-structured data to drive meaningful results from analytics and AI.
The panel also noted the importance of people in digital transformation, emphasizing that change management is where most projects falter. While companies invest in technology, failure to align teams, processes and culture can prevent real progress.

Sustainability and transparency are no longer optional
With growing regulatory demands- such as ESG compliance and EU deforestation rules- transparency across the supply chain is essential. Manufacturers must be able to track and report on sourcing materials, and supplier data, often reaching deep into their networks.
This creates challenges in data ownership, accuracy, and accessibility that can be resolved using digital tools and collaborative supplier platforms that enable companies to
