commercial realities that our own contribution sits within,” Derek expands.
Alongside that commitment to quality, Helix has made meaningful progress on sustainability, both within its own operations and in its broader contribution to the industries it serves. Last year, the company was awarded ISO 14001 certification in recognition of its environmental management systems and the steps taken over the preceding 12 months to monitor and improve its supply chain, energy usage, waste management, materials and design processes. At an industry level, Helix works with a wide range of sectors to explore hybridization and electrification opportunities and has previously participated in the Decarbonising Midlands Aerospace Cluster( DMAC) project, which mapped out strategies to reduce UK aerospace industrial emissions by 90 percent by 2050.
The company’ s engineering philosophy is shaped as much by culture as it is by capability. Helix fosters an environment built on empowerment, giving people real ownership of their work and the space to think creatively.“ We have inherited a great engineering heritage, and along with that have cultivated a streak of out-of-the-box thinking that has enabled us to develop so many unique solutions over the years. Along with that intellectual curiosity, many senior team members, me included, began their careers as apprentices, learning engineering realities at the same time as the theory. That practical grounding shapes how we lead our teams. For me, a successful team is one guided by a culture that gives people a sense of agency and control over their projects, with only a light oversight from the management team. We all learn by doing, and I try to make sure everyone here has the opportunity to do exactly that,” Derek ends. ■
