Founded in 1979 by Steve Simpson in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada , Prepac originated as a pre-finished product manufacturer , providing custom printed and finished particleboard shelving for the construction industry . The company then went on to launch its first RTA storage products into the home improvement retail sector . Despite the economic recession of the early 1980s , the products were a hit and sales were strong .
Success rapidly followed and in 1984 , its Closet Organizers and Cabinet Pac storage solutions were launched nationwide . Growth continued and its product line expanded with the addition of Kitchen Kits and a new , wall-hanging garage storage program called Hang-ups .
