Sustainability has become an increasingly important area of focus for the business, and Geven is actively contributing to this effort through its involvement in RECREATE; a European research project focused on developing innovative recycling and circular reuse solutions for fiber-reinforced composite materials. Geven participates in the project as an industrial partner, working alongside research centers and other industry players to address one of the most challenging aspects of aircraft seat lifecycle management.“ Historically, when a seat would reach the end of its service life, it would typically be thrown away. The RECREATE project focuses on changing that. We are working with different research centers to develop new materials with a reversible lifecycle, where a finished part can be broken back down and the raw material reused, either within the aviation industry where standards allow it, or redirected to automotive or civil industries where the specifications are more flexible.
“ The most significant work we are doing is on the composite side, which is where the greatest environmental impact occurs from the production scraps right through to the end-of-life part. We are using those scraps to create specialist material compounds that can be used across other industries, incorporating natural fibers as a more ecological alternative to fiberglass or carbon. For the finished parts themselves, we are developing reversible processes that allow large composite components to be broken down into smaller
